You can use Chrome to translate pages. You can also change your preferred language in Chrome.

Translate pages in Chrome

You can use Chrome to translate a page into other languages.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. Go to a page you want to translate.
  3. On the right of the address bar, select Translate Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (1).
    • You can right-click anywhere on the page and select Translate to [Language].
  4. Select your preferred language.
    • If Translate doesn’t work, refresh the page.

Tips:

  • You can also translate a page by:
    1. Go to translate.google.com.
    2. At the top, select Websites.
  • If you want to translate audio content on a page, select Live Translate. Learn how to manage captions and translations in Chrome.

Translate selected text

You can translate a section of a page.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. Go to a page you want to translate.
  3. Highlight the text you want to translate.
  4. Right-click the highlighted text.
  5. Select Translate selection to [Language].

Tip: To change the translated language, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (2) Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (3) Choose another language Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (4) Down arrow Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (5).

Change your default page translation settings

You can use Chrome to translate pages based on your preferred language settings.

Important: To turn translation suggestions on or off on your Chromebook, learn how to manage your Chromebook's languages.

Turn translation on or off

Control whether Chrome will offer to translate pages.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (6) Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (7) Settings.
  3. On the left, selectLanguages.
  4. Under “Google Translate,” turn Use Google Translate on or off.

Change your preferred language for translations

You can select the language Chrome translates the page into.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (8) Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (9) Settings.
  3. On the left, select Languages.
  4. Under “Google Translate,” select Translate into this language.
  5. Select the language that you want from the language list.

Add preferred languages

If the page is in more than one language, it shows your preferred language first.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (10) Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (11) Settings.
  3. On the left, select Languages.
  4. Under “Preferred languages,” select Add languages.
  5. Select the languages that you want to add.
  6. Select Add.
  7. If you want to:
    • Reorder languages: Beside the language you want to move, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (12)Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (13) Move down.
    • Remove a language: Beside the language you want to remove, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (14)Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (15) Remove.

Manage your list of automatically translated languages

You can control which language Chrome automatically translates.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (16) Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (17) Settings.
  3. On the left, select Languages.
  4. Under “Google Translate,” next to “Automatically translate these languages," select Add languages.
  5. Select the languages that you want to add.
  6. Select Add.
  7. To remove a language, next to the language you want to remove, select Remove Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (18).

Manage list of never translated languages

You can set which languages you never want Chrome to offer to translate.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (19) Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (20) Settings.
  3. On the left, select Languages.
  4. Under “Google Translate,” next to “Never offer to translate these languages,” select Add languages.
  5. Select the languages that you want to add.
  6. Select Add.
  7. To remove a language, next to the language you want to remove, select Remove Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (21).

Change the language of your Chrome browser

On Windows computers, you can set Chrome to show all settings and menus in your preferred language.

Important:

  • Chromebook: To add or remove web content languages on your Chromebook, learn how to manage your Chromebook’s languages.
  • Mac or Linux: Chrome will automatically display in the default system language for your Mac or Linux.
  1. On your Windows computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (22) Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (23) Settings.
  3. On the left, select Languages.
  4. Under "Preferred languages," next to the language you'd like to use, select More Translate pages and change Chrome languages - Computer (24).
    • If the language isn't listed, add it by clicking Add languages.
  5. Select Display Google Chrome in this language.
    • This option is only available on Windows computers.
  6. Restart Chrome to apply the changes.

Write in an unsupported language

If you need to write using a language that your computer doesn't support, use the Google Input Tools Chrome extension.

If you're using Windows, you might need to configure your Windows language settings to add East Asian languages or other languages that use complex scripts.
